Don't Believe Everything You Hear About Starting An Online Business

The rapidly increasing interest in setting up an online business has sparked a lot of debate in the marketplace about this industry. There are the inevitable "gurus" who will tell that trading online is the path to instant riches and you can be giving up your boring full time job before you know it. At the other end of the spectrum are the wiseacres who tell you that it takes a very long time to make money and demands more of your time than you have and that you will probably give up long before your business starts to make any money at all. The truth lies somewhere in between.
Firstly let's examine the dynamics of operating an online business. If you break it down into its main elements. You research your niche and decide what you would like to sell. You plan. You set up in business online by employing a web designer to design a custom made store. You then find products to sell. You do the Search Engine Optimisation. You set up the back office and payment processing. You start to drive traffic to your website. Or alternatively you can have all this done for you by buying a ready made e-commerce business.. However, a word of caution. Make sure that the company you buy from guarantees to give you personal one to one training in all aspects of operating an online business.
Whichever path you choose to take, the real work now begins. That is finding customers. This is where you can hear the words of the "wiseacres" ringing in your ears. "Your e-commerce business makes big demands on your time", "You wont have a positive cash flow for a long time" etc. The reality? Yes it does take time, and no you cannot expect a large amount of money coming into your account immediately. But at this point, it is vitally important to understand that you are building a business
In building a business we mean setting up the structure and processes that drives traffic to you constantly. For instance you set up your social media accounts. You set up an account on YouTube. You start to write articles on topics related to your business and the industry. You start to build a permission based email marketing list Of course it is a steep learning curve, but when it's done it is in place and doesn't go away. Unlike a bricks and mortar retail business you do not have to incur massive costs from having to have a presence on the high street. Once these structures and processes are in place, they are permanent and you can build on them. You can also start to leverage your time by integrating your marketing. An example would be publishing articles on an article directory which are automatically sent to your twitter followers or Facebook fans so giving your business a lot more exposure. The next step is to start to leverage your time by gradually outsourcing some of the work. But always remember that training is vital and always look for a firm that takes an interest in you and provides personal one to one training.
