Why Finding A "Sub Culture" Could Prove To Be A Great Niche When Starting An Online Business

What is a sub culture and why should you think about this when starting a business online? A sub culture is a pastime, interest, hobby or sport where people are passionately interested and already spend money on. Some sub cultures such as golf, fishing and keep fit are obvious as they have millions of devoted followers who indulge their passion for them at every opportunity and in consequence they receive a great deal of publicity.

Our contention is that you can find some very profitable niches for your online business in some of the less advertised and less well known areas. Let's look at two examples. I recently moved to a different area of the country and one of my neighbours introduced me to the local jazz scene. I had always been quite keen on some forms of jazz, but had no idea that there were so many "addicts" who travelled miles to country hotels to listen to their favourite groups on a weekday evening. Local jazz festivals were something else I discovered that are magnets for audiences from all over the country. Here is a subculture that definitely needs exploring. Jazz enthusiasts are interested in timetables for local venues, CDs and DVDs of their favourite bands, jazz memorabilia etc. There is also a valuable lesson here too in terms of identifying the type of people who follow jazz. Many of these people are retired and on good pensions and like to spend their disposable income on entertainment. There could be few better demographic types to target than this.

Another subculture worth exploring is the whole area of holidaying and living on canals. This is not perhaps the most obvious of areas and one that comes to mind immediately. But consider the reasons why this should be of interest to people in today's world. Firstly, many people may be forced by the high cost of living, depleted incomes or redundancy to completely rethink their lifestyle. If the children have grown up and flown the nest, living on a narrow boat may well be a matter of necessity. It may certainly be by choice if people decide that they would like to live at a much reduced cost and have the freedom to go where they wish. A second reason this area is attractive is the fact that families with young children may want to holiday at home and save the cost of travelling abroad. Again there will be a great amount of interest in this area and many people who will be new to this type of living will require a lot of information and there will certainly be scope for selling clothing and other products online.

These are just two examples of sub cultures that may not come to mind immediately, but when you start to examine the changing spending habits of people in a changing world you will find some very lucrative and growing areas like this where you can establish your online business before it others find them.
